Raza de caballo ligero, buena monta y con un andar característico: el paso de carrera.

Fue criado para recorrer las plantaciones del sur de EE.UU. Mide en promedio 15,2 palmos (1,54 m [61 pulg.]) de alzada, y pesa cerca de 450 kg (1.000 lb). El color de su pelaje varía. Sus antepasados eran cualquier caballo capaz de efectuar el paso de carrera, un andar natural que no puede adquirirse, pero el semental con más influencia fue un Standardbred. El paso de carrera, más rápido que un simple andar, es un movimiento rasante, deslizante y de estiramiento; el pie delantero toca el suelo un instante antes que el pie trasero en diagonal, el cual rebasa la huella del delantero en varios centímetros.
